Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used for a wide variety of dental issues and are one of the most versatile and common dental restorations we offer at West Veranda Dental Care.

When cemented into place, a crown fully encases the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

When is a crown Needed

1. Broken or Fractured Tooth

When a tooth is cracked or broken — especially a molar with a large amalgam filling — a crown is often the best way to hold the remaining tooth structure together and prevent further splitting.

2. Large or Failed Fillings

When a filling is too large to be replaced with another filling, or when the tooth structure around it has weakened or broken down, a crown provides full coverage and protection.

3. Severe Tooth Decay

When decay is so extensive that a simple filling won’t suffice, a crown restores the tooth’s full shape, size, and function.

4. After a Root Canal

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment become brittle and more prone to fracture. A crown protects and strengthens the treated tooth.

TYPES OF DENTAL CROWNS

We offer several types of crowns to meet your specific needs:

  • Porcelain Crowns — Tooth-colored and highly aesthetic, ideal for front teeth.
  • Ceramic Crowns — Metal-free and natural-looking, a popular choice for those with metal allergies.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns — Durable with a natural appearance, offering strength and aesthetics.
  • Gold/Metal Crowns — Extremely durable and often used for back molars where chewing pressure is greatest.

THE DENTAL CROWN PROCEDURE

Getting a crown typically requires two office visits. During the first visit, we examine and prepare the tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary crown. At the second visit, the permanent crown is fitted, adjusted for bite, and permanently cemented. We use the latest digital impression technology to ensure a precise and comfortable fit.

CARING FOR YOUR DENTAL CROWN

While dental crowns are highly durable, they still require good oral hygiene care. Brush and floss your crowned tooth just as you would your natural teeth. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other hard foods that could damage the crown. Visit us regularly for checkups so we can monitor the health of your crown and the tooth underneath.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, dental crowns can last between 10 and 30 years depending on the material used and how well you maintain your oral hygiene.

Is getting a crown painful?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during treatment. Some soreness in the gum area afterward is normal and typically resolves within a few days.

Can a crowned tooth get a cavity?

The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth structure underneath can. Good oral hygiene is important to protect the margin where the crown meets the tooth.
