Root Canal
Root canals have an undeserved reputation for being painful — in reality, modern root canal treatment relieves the pain of an infected tooth and saves it from extraction. At West Veranda Dental Care, we use the latest techniques and technologies to make root canal treatment as comfortable as possible.
Our goal is always to save your natural tooth whenever possible, and root canal therapy is one of the most effective ways to do that.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) and seals the tooth to prevent reinfection. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When it becomes infected due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental procedures, a root canal is needed to save the tooth.
SIGNS YOU MAY NEED A ROOT CANAL
You may need a root canal if you experience:
- Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
- A persistent pimple on the gums
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE
The root canal procedure is performed under local anesthesia for your comfort. We access the inside of the tooth, carefully remove the infected pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and fill and seal them with a material called gutta-percha. A crown is then typically placed over the tooth to protect it and restore its function. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable and straightforward the procedure is.
RECOVERY AFTER A ROOT CANAL
Most patients return to normal activities the day after a root canal. You may experience some tenderness for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent crown is placed. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will ensure the long-term success of your treatment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is a root canal painful?
With modern anesthesia and techniques, a root canal should not be any more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The procedure actually relieves the pain caused by the infection.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals can be completed in one to two appointments, each lasting about 60-90 minutes.
What happens if I don’t get a root canal?
An untreated infected tooth will not heal on its own. The infection can spread to surrounding teeth, bone, and tissue, potentially becoming a serious systemic health problem.
