Dental Hygiene

Good dental hygiene is the foundation of a healthy smile and overall well-being. At West Veranda Dental Care, our skilled dental hygienists provide thorough professional cleanings and education to help you maintain optimal oral health between visits.

Regular dental hygiene visits do more than just clean your teeth — they allow our team to monitor your oral health, detect problems early, and provide personalized guidance on your at-home care routine.

PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANINGS

Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits at home, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) that only a professional cleaning can remove. During your cleaning, our hygienist will remove tartar buildup, clean between your teeth and along the gum line, polish your teeth to remove surface stains, and check for signs of gum disease, cavities, and other oral health concerns.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR VISITS

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist for a cleaning and exam at least twice per year. Regular visits allow us to catch problems in their early stages when they are easier and less expensive to treat. We monitor changes in your oral health over time and can spot early warning signs of conditions such as gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth decay.

SCALING AND ROOT PLANING

For patients with gum disease or significant tartar buildup below the gum line, we may recommend a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. This treatment removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smooths the tooth root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth. It is performed under local anesthesia for your comfort.

AT-HOME DENTAL HYGIENE TIPS

Good oral hygiene at home is just as important as professional cleanings. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once per day, using an antimicrobial mouthwash, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I get a dental cleaning?

Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months. However, patients with gum disease or a history of cavities may need more frequent visits.

Is a dental cleaning painful?

Most cleanings are comfortable and painless. If you have sensitive teeth or gum disease, we can offer options to minimize any discomfort.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above the gum line. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes below the gum line to treat gum disease.
