Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry, also known as sleep apnea dentistry, involves the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring using oral appliance therapy. At West Veranda Dental Care, we work closely with sleep specialists to provide effective, comfortable treatment options.

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or are experiencing symptoms such as loud snoring, waking up gasping for air, excessive daytime sleepiness, or morning headaches, we may be able to help.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, causing breathing to stop and start. These interruptions — which can occur hundreds of times per night — deprive the body of oxygen and disrupt restful sleep. Untreated sleep apnea is associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other serious health conditions.

ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY

Oral appliance therapy is a comfortable, effective, and non-invasive treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. A custom-fitted oral appliance, similar to a mouth guard or retainer, is worn during sleep. It works by gently repositioning the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open, allowing you to breathe freely and sleep soundly.

BENEFITS OVER CPAP

While CPAP therapy is highly effective, many patients find it uncomfortable or difficult to use consistently. Oral appliances offer several advantages:

  • Small, portable, and easy to travel with
  • Silent — no machine noise
  • Comfortable and easy to wear
  • No mask, tubes, or electricity required
  • High patient compliance rates

THE SLEEP DENTISTRY PROCESS

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, the first step is a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis and assess its severity. We work with your physician and sleep specialist to determine if oral appliance therapy is appropriate for you. If so, we take impressions of your teeth and fit you with a custom oral appliance. Follow-up visits are important to ensure proper fit, effectiveness, and comfort.
